Energy Efficiency is a growing business in Malaysia. The awareness to be energy efficient is growing in all sectors including residential, buildings, industries and transportation. As it grows, the demand for ESCOs (Energy Service Companies) will also increase.
Our Government in Malaysia is planning to take aggressive steps and initiative to promote EE and it’s practices in general. The need to be energy efficient is not only to ensure optimum cost of operating energy utilization but reflects responsibility of the nation on environmental issues which contributes to global warming and climate change through wasteful use of energy.
MAESCO is an Association that was conceived through the MIEEIP project which was a project co-funded by UNDP, GEF and the Malaysian Government. Through the formation of MAESCO, it has brought together member companies whose main focus is providing of services and expertise to bring about energy efficiency opportunities to end users of all sectors.
Through the association, it also provides the conduit for companies’ undertaking energy efficiency (ESCOs) to be proactive with the Government and relevant authorities on the possibilities of promoting such practices as a viable solution whilst meeting the Government’s target to recognize EE as a 5th. fuel policy.
Amongst the expertise available in it’s members are training programs for Energy Managers, Audit services, EE equipment Specialists, air conditioning controller system expertise (performance contracting), total facilities management and etc.
Even though Performance contracting carried out by ESCOs is relatively a new business concept in Malaysia, there are already members who has successfully champion such a contractual model i.e. being rewarded against the performance of an installation of a recommended EE measure. It would be a matter of time when the financial institution play an active role in financing EE projects.
The Government has also reflected it’s seriousness of establishing a clear national EE policy with specific EE improvement targets in short and long term. New regulations for Energy Managers are already in place and the MS1525 standard towards building design is already widely referred to by professional practitioners in the building sector and all relevant organizations, associations, NGO and professional bodies with the common intention towards sustainable development in relation to the energy sector. It is therefore important that MAESCO emits genuine and credible companies with the intention to grow with MAESCO and the nation’s aspiration towards Energy Efficiency.
It is therefore MAESCO’s intention to partner with the Government’s good intentions closely to ensure that only genuine companies with the capacity to effectively provide credible services would be allowed to participate in the association. It is also MAESCO’s long term intention to promote performance contracting as a key business model of providing businesses which would gain the confidence level of clients and customers be it the industrial, commercial and residential sector.
